The unfashionable basics
Sleep, daylight, alcohol, and attention are still the largest levers most people have — including people curious about psychedelics.
It is possible to care about novel therapeutics and still tell the truth about the ordinary. Chronic insomnia, heavy alcohol, untreated apnea, social isolation, and a life with no daylight will swamp most downstream interventions. This is not moralizing. It is pharmacology of a sort: the milieu in which any later tool has to work.
A short list that still earns its keep
- Protect a sleep window as if it were a medication.
- Get outdoor light in the first hour of the day when you can.
- Treat alcohol as a psychoactive with a crash, not as a personality.
- Move the body daily in a way that does not require heroics.
- Keep one human appointment you do not cancel when you feel low.
- If you take psychiatric medicines, do not freelance the taper.
None of this makes psychedelic research unimportant. It does mean that “I have optimized nothing and I need a ceremony” is a sentence worth examining. The Institute will keep teaching both layers: the unfashionable and the emerging.
